Before Midnight (2013)

Before Midnight is a film directed by Richard Linklater featuring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. It’s the sequel to Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004). It tells the story of Jesse and Céline, nine years after the events in Before Sunset, during their vacation in Greece.

As with the previous two films of the Before saga, it is filled with long, natural, dialogue scenes, where communication, humour and thoughts alternate. It takes place in Greece and the supporting actors all bring relevant and interesting perspectives. It’s an interesting take on long-term relationships, marriage and life in general.

The fairy tale element is less glaring than in the previous two films and the time that has passed has allowed for a lot of good changes.

I don’t feel I’ve wasted my time watching that saga and I don’t believe in monogamy at all. The acting is great, the dialogues flow so naturally it’s almost like overhearing conversation rather than watching a fictitious film… It’s great.
